I am Daniel B. Shapiro, founding attorney of the Law Office of Daniel B. Shapiro in Montclair, New Jersey. I am a graduate of Columbia University and Brooklyn Law School.
My work in real estate law and litigation grounded me as an attorney, but I have found that there is more that can be done. By devoting my practice to helping sexual abuse survivors heal and move on with their lives, I am utilizing my skills in a way that does real good for those who are ready to take a legal step in their healing process.
I have a personal connection and true empathy for the victims of child sexual abuse. I graduated from a well-known New York private school where sexual abuse of students took place. In 2012, some courageous students broke their silence and disclosed that they were abused. Eventually, as survivors came forward one by one, it became clear that more than a dozen teachers had abused students for more than three decades. Most of those students kept their stories a secret for over 30 years.
This school's story along with Penn State, the Boy Scouts and the Catholic Church are slowly changing the public perception of childhood abuse. It is becoming less difficult for survivors to break their silence and seek assistance from a lawyer.
I had been involved in witnessing the stories of sexual abuse survivors for many years. Often, those stories were told for the first time in public. The act of simply telling and listening with undivided attention is healing. Disclosing one's story can lift a tremendous weight off one's shoulders.
